CSS List style question? Please urgent!?

I'd like to know how I can control the distance between the list image I'm assigning to the list and the beginning of the text, right now there's like 10 pixels between them. It seems it appears that way by default and seem to be able to change it, I tried using padding but no neither margin works.

Please help this is urgent.

Does it have to be an actual list <ul>?? You'd have ultimate control with hspace and vspace or padding, margins etc if it's not a list.
