Help... general guidance into Web Design or Development needed?

Help... general guidance into Web Design or Development needed?

Hi,

Can anyone provide me with a little guidance on how best to get 'skilled up' in web design or development (unsure which way I want to go at present),

Would you recommend a degree or being self taught with portfolio?

Also... is there much difference in pay for design vs development??

I'm a complete novice, I've only just started learning HTML!!

Thanks in advance for answers!

From my own experience i bought Dreamweaver and got a couple of good manuals - by Khristine Annwan Page.

I worked thru the book-

Then spent sometime looking at webpages I liked and used the View source option to see the code, working thru to see what bits did what.

Some times drawing a blank but usually learning something along the way.

look locally for a colleg or uni some offer part time free or cheap courses in web stuff.
