I studied abroad in Poland for a semester, and it was GREAT.

For architecture, you'll definitely want to study in Krakow. There, you'll find structures from a huge variety of architectural styles and periods. Most of Krakow's pre-WWII architecture survived WWII and the Russian occupation afterward, and the city is very unique in that respect. You'll find plenty to fascinate you in the city itself, and you'll be a short bus ride away from many sites of particular interest (the Gorale style in Zakopane) and less than a day's train ride away from cities such as Prague, Berlin, and Vienna (fact: Krakow is closer to Vienna than to Warsaw).

One of the best parts of Krakow is that it's still a city of Polish people, and that even though it's very easy to spot kerchief-wearing grannies hobbling along the sidewalks, the city is full of students and the liveliness and culture that students thrive upon.

Look for programs affiliated with the Jagiellonian University. That's the second oldest university in Europe, and it's excellent (Copernicus and Pope John Paul II are probably the most famous alumni). The JU has a School of Langauge and Culture that offers Polish lessons, so you might want to also enroll there. When I landed in Krakow, the only word of Polish that I knew was "butter," but they got me up to speed.

You can get around Krakow easily on foot, and there's also a tram network, a large bus station, and a main train station. The airport (John Paul II Airport, aka Krakow Balice Airport) is either 10m or 10km away from the city, so you'll need to take a taxi ride (about US$30) or a short train ride from there.

Food is darn cheap and delicious. Avoid the touristy places (you'll know them when you see them) and eat where the Polish students eat. "Milk Bars," cafeteria-style restaurants with home cooked food served by plain-looking Polish matrons, are delicious and should be your lunchtime destination. If you eat lunch in the milk bars and cook breakfast and dinner yourself, you should easily get by on US$40/week for food. Expect to spend from US$2-3 for a hearty lunch and a beverage in a milk bar to US$15 for a decent meal in a touristy restaurant (where most customers deal in British Pounds).

For student housing, I'd recommend Dom Studencki Nawojka (http://nawojka.bratniak.krakow.pl/html/index.php?id=1&lang=en ).

I studied through a company called Lexia (www.lexiaintl.org), and I absolutely loved their program. I think it would be a dream come true for an architecture student. You submit a proposal of what you want to study, and if you're accepted to their program, then they match you with experts in your field and help you do a field research project about it. The cost of the program also includes several out-of-town excursions. Along with your field research project (4 credits), you take a research methods seminar (2 credits), Polish language classes (6 credits), and a Polish culture seminar (4 credits). The program director for their Polish program is an archaeologist who knows a lot about architecture, and so we talked about architecture in our research methods seminar and our culture seminar. She even took us to parts of Wawel Castle that are currently being excavated and are closed to the public. If I had been a freshman instead of a senior when I studied abroad with them, I definitely would have gone back for one of their year-long programs.
