Here is some helpful advice from a guy who has been a programming professional for almost two decades.

Don't get caught up on one single language or programming paradigm.

My first college class in programming was in FORTRAN using punch cards. I believe it is clear to see that knowledge of that particular language is not exactly highly sought after in the industry these days.

In my career I have been through several evolutionary changes, each making the previous language and tools all but irrelevant.

So... my advice to you is get a solid foundation in the fundamentals of software engineering for these principles don't really change much. Additionally, learn multiple languages and tools to make you more flexible. Further, when you get a job don't assume that your <insert tool chain and language here> gig will last forever, you must keep up with the changes in the industry or some hot snot young programmer with a freshly minted degree will be happy to step up to the plate in your place.
