Need to get rid of virus, what should I do?
I have a windll virus - and gods know what else on my other computer. It was my sister's and she got a new one, giving this to me. (used it in college to download tons of stuff)
What is the best FREE anti virus? Are there any free anti virus programs that do a good job?
I have a PC. If I must step up and buy protection, which is the best? Norton kept crashing my computer >=(
I'm also contemplating taking the computer somewhere to get the hard drive wiped clean and re-installing everything. How much should this cost?

If you want free anti-virus software then go with AVG 8.0 free edition, some people suggest Avira AntiVir which does have a good detection rate but is let down by very slow updates, the free version can take upto two hours to update, which makes AntiVir almost unusable.
Other people suggest Avast which has an outdated interface (Link below) and is poor at detecting viruses (pc pro labs test). http://www.download.com/3004-2239_4-1082...
AVG 8.0 is the best free anti-virus software its not perfect but has a nice interface, decent detection and quick updates. http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-avg-...
Ad-aware is a useful free program run it once a week to clear obvious adware. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_a...
I would recommend using the firefox web browser it is simple and easy to use and it blocks a lot of drive-by viruses that internet explorer would let through.
Proof that firefox is safer: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3qxg0z6YQy...
I've tried other browsers like Opera (way too fussy and complicated to use) and Safari (too slow & and not as customizable), but firefox remains my main browser.
Download firefox: http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/
Install the McAfee SiteAdvisor add-on without it you are browsing blind you may want to disable AVG's linkscanner add-on as McAfee SiteAdvisor does the same thing but slightly better. http://www.siteadvisor.com/

The things you'll need to do.
Go to google and search
Avg anti spyware
and Avg Download both of them and update
Search Ccleaner and download
and then search wise disk cleaner and download wise disk cleaner ONLY. Then with avg anti spyware and the other avg scan your entire computer (may take some time) After it's done delete all the viruses that it shows.
Then use Ccleaner on your computer, it gets rid of cookies and things that you don't need and take up a lot of space on your computer. should take less then 2 minutes (matters)
Then use wise disk cleaner and scan it will show ALOT of stuff since you've never done it before.
There you have it, your computer will be working fine after this.

If I was in your position I would do a factory reset and start as if it were a brand new computer. I'm assuming it's a pc and not a mac. if so you'll either have a windows back up disk or a percentage of the hard drive will be set aside for restoring. If it's the latter make a windows back up disk. You'll find the instructions in Control panel. Once you have your back up disk save all important files and programs on disk and Google Factory reset or hard drive formating and follow the instructions. I's not a quick process, but you will be left with a completely clean computer, just like it was when it was new. Then re load windows and all your personal files, and to protect it download some free security. I use and am very happy with the Free Comodo firewall. AVG Free version 8. Spybot Search and Destroy and Spyware Blaster. and to maintain my computer I use C cleaner. All are Free. Just Google the nemes and you'll find them. As i said, this is what I'd do if I were in your position. I've done it three times in the past and have al;ways been glad of it.
Good luck.
