Get the vista box, a new one. Go to hp.com and customize one the way you want it. HP has been best in quality since Dell went into the toilet a few years ago. I've had a vista HP notebook since Nov. 1, and its fine. 10 people have bought HP notebooks on my recommendation and they are all happy. A friend has been selling about 50 HP notebooks a year along with some electronics that he manufactures, he has tried several other brands but prefers HP A to Z. You'll be happier if you turn off UAC and drive indexing. Mine came with 1 gig of ram it worked fine. Since I run a bunch of Adobe apps, I ordered and installed another 2 gig from newegg for $35.
Most of Vista's perceived problems are from people who haven't used it themselves. They are just joining up with others to put it down.
Happens every time Microsoft comes out with a new version. I still have my MSDOS 1.0 diskette, I've used every version of dos and windows since. Vista is by far not Microsoft's worst work. XP was much worse in its first year or so. The pc gurus and I, I worked with back then tried to install it at home, played with it for a couple weeks and went back to the problem free windows 2000 which was solid. Windows was just a toy until they came out with version 3.1. Then it was accepted into the corporate world. Windows ME was just 98 with a bunch of bugs thrown in. I didn't go with xp until I bought a new Vaio notebook which was fine. Usually the factories hammer out the problems before selling it.
MSDOS 6.00 is very memorable. MS sent out swat teams to the major magazines and other reviewers to try and water down the problems that came up in test machines. The complaints didn't stop until version 6.22 came out.
