Windows XP would not shut down?

Everytime I shut down on reboot my system it freeses at the "windows is shutting down" and I had to press the power button. I already unplugged all hardware off pc restore and even perform system recovery and still is haning up at the "windows is shutting down". Any ideas?

Have you downloaded all of the latest patches from MS?

scan the drive for errors, tick both boxes and restart.
