will adding a xml sitemap improve my Google ranking ?

I have been informed that a sitemap will improve my Google ranking ? I was under the impression that a sitemap is a Search Engine friendly tool to have all your page spidered, but I do see how it can improve ranking ?

All my websites pages are already spidered by Google so will it make a blind bit of difference ?

It will get your pages indexed faster, and the more pages you have, the better G likes you.

It may make the spiders job easier, but I can't see how it will affect your ranking as I believe external links to your page and having content in the pages which match the meta tags are the most important. You could try putting google adsense in your pages as that really moved me up the rankings and my website is just about empty just now.
